As the days grow longer and the air fills with the scent of blooming flowers, spring invites people to step outside and embrace the new season. Whether it’s going on hikes, heading to the beach or simply taking a walk through the neighborhood, there are many ways to enjoy spring.
Due to the warmer weather, local outdoor festivities come to life. Flea markets, like the Rose Bowl or Silverlake markets offer fashion lovers the chance to explore and discover their next great outfit.
“The thing I love to do when it’s nice out is thrifting,” said Jamie Quenqua ‘25. “Specifically the Rose Bowl Flea Market is just so fun to see a bunch of cute spring, summer or fall clothing pieces!”
With the arrival of spring, students can also embrace the outdoors, exploring new adventures and making the most of the sunny days and fresh air. Some hikes to try this spring include the Point Dume State Preserve Hike, or the Paradise Falls hike.
“I like to do a lot of mountain biking and fishing,” said Ashton Morbitzer ‘26. “There’s a lot of good trails for biking around Chesebro and Newbury Park.”
While outdoors, spring provides the opportunity to plant new life. The season’s warm sun, paired with refreshing rain, creates the perfect conditions to kickstart a new garden project.
“My favorite thing is gardening,” said Jennifer Boyd, AP Environmental Science and Honors Environmental Field Studies teacher. “Spring is the time to plant a lot of vegetables and then harvest them later in the year. Some easy things to grow are green beans, carrots or tomatoes.”
People can enjoy blossomim=ng friendships too, as spring’s warmer days and blooming landscapes create the perfect setting for gathering with friends and enjoying the outdoors over a meal. Whether it’s spreading a blanket under a shady tree or sharing snacks in a local park, picnics are a simple way to make the most of the season.
“Something I’d like to do this year is to make a little picnic with my friends and bring a bunch of food,” said Quenqua.
Spring signifies the arrival of new animal life, offering students the perfect opportunity to spot wildlife in their natural habitats. Birding is a unique way to experience biodiversity, where people observe birds in their natural environments.
“I also like to go birding,” said Boyd. “We have so much bird biodiversity in the local area, so on campus that it’s very fun to go see all the different types of birds.”
The warmer weather creates opportunities for everyone, allowing all to find activities that suit their preferences. It’s the perfect time to relax, enjoy the outdoors and make time for the things you love especially for seniors who may be moving on to new experiences.
“The big thing is taking in the sun and everything before I graduate,” said Quenqua. “I really want to take advantage of the spring time with my friends.”
