On Sept. 12, 2017, Apple unveiled three new iPhones at its new Steve Jobs Theater, located in the future Apple headquarters in Cupertino, California.
The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus look and feel very similar to the previous generation iPhone with the familiar top and bottom bezels. However, inside, the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus still pack a punch with an upgraded Bionic A11 chip, which offers improved performance, power efficiency and image processing to accompany the dual camera bump on the back.
Possibly the most noticeable difference between the iPhone X and the iPhone 8 is the brand new bezel-less display. This means that even though the body of the iPhone 8 is larger than the X, the actual display of the X is larger. The iPhone 8 Plus’ display is only 5.5” while the regular iPhone 8 has a 4.7” display.
The brand new iPhone X houses everything Apple has been working on in the last year. Boasting a 5.8” OLED display, the iPhone X is easily the largest in leap in terms of design for Apple in the last decade. Ditching the top and bottom bezels the X pushes the screen to the very top, bottom and sides of the metallic frame without sacrificing the front-facing camera or speakers.
With the removal of the home button and Touch ID, Apple implements new 3D face-scanning technology in the front facing camera. With FaceID, iPhone X users have to look at their phone and it will be unlocked in a split second. FaceID works in the dark and only when the user’s eyes are open. Along with unlocking the phone, it is also used to download apps and even pay with Apple Pay.
Another brand new feature in the iPhone X is an Organic LED, or OLED screen. The advantage of this screen is that individual pixels can turn on and off, making the black levels extra dark and the contrast superior to that of a traditional panel with a backlight.
Accompanying the display, the back reveals the return of the glass body much like the iPhone 4 from years ago. Unlike the now-primitive iPhone 4, the X has wireless charging and waterproofing capabilities.
The X boasts a brand new dual camera system that sits vertically on the back of the phone. The 12 megapixel sensor is the latest from Apple and houses improved optical image stabilization for quick snaps even in low light situations.
All three iPhones are available for pre-order. The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus retail at $700 and $800 respectively, come in three colors and starts shipping Sept. 26. The base-model iPhone X starts at $1000, comes in two colors and starts shipping Nov. 3. However, due to the sheer amount of demand, Apple is not expected to be able to fulfill all orders of its new phone until early 2018.
